財務報表分析是企業基本活動為對象，以財務報表為主要資訊來源，以分析和綜合為主要方法的系統認識企業的過程，目的是瞭解過去、評價現在和預測未來，以幫助企業改善決策。財務報表分析的物件是企業的各項基本活動。財務報表分析就是從報表中獲取符合報表使用人分析目的的資訊，認識企業活動的特點，評價其業績，發現其問題。

Financial statement analysis is a systematic process for understanding an enterprise, which targets the enterprise’s fundamental activities, takes financial statements as the primary source of information, and adopts analysis and synthesis as major methods. It aims to understand past performance, evaluate current status and forecast future trends, assisting enterprises in improving decision-making. The objects of financial statement analysis are various fundamental activities of the enterprise. Financial statement analysis extracts information from statements that meets the analytical objectives of statement users, identifies characteristics of corporate activities, assesses business performance and detects existing problems.

財務報表能夠全面反映企業的財務狀況、經營成果和現金流量情況。但是單純從財務報表上的資料還不能直接或全面說明企業的財務狀況，特別是不能說明企業經營狀況的好壞和經營成果的高低，只有將企業的財務指標與有關的資料進行比較才能說明企業財務狀況所處的地位，因此要進行財務報表分析。

Financial statements can comprehensively reflect an enterprise’s financial position, operating results and cash flows. Nevertheless, data shown merely on financial statements cannot directly or fully explain the enterprise’s financial status, in particular the quality of business operations and the level of operating results. Only by comparing the enterprise’s financial indicators with relevant reference data can we determine where the enterprise stands financially, hence the need for financial statement analysis.
